Is it safe having someone buy me a car at police auction?

I am 57, disabled, no mechanical skill, and I am thinking of buying a police aution car. Friend who buys them is mechanic. Says he will find a great deal. Any one tried this? What is your experience? Thankyou

  1. Sure, if he has mechanical skill/know how and you trust him. You can find good deals, the sate liquidates its vehicles when they decide to buy new ones or the useful life is over. Just as long as he knows what he is looking at and doesn't buy a pos you will be fine. BTW, they have all police equipment removed so there will be holes and spaces in the in interroir. Some states leave the back seat in others don't, it depends.
  2. Someone buying you a car at auction is safe, but is allowing someone who is 57 and disabled to drive said car safe? I think not. If you're disabled, take the bus.
  3. some times it works other times it dont/all he can do is go with his experience
  4. You can get good deals but you can also get some real lemons. Anyone who lets their car go to a police auction is not going to be taking good care of it.
  5. Don't do it. The reason they are at a police auction is because they have been abandoned or seized. Most people who walk away from cars do so because they are junk and they never took care of them. They don't let you test drive and they sure are not going to let it go so it can be put up on a lift to check a whole bunch of things that need checking. The few good ones get into bidding and your buddy will get one of the last bids toward retail after the wholesale guys drop out. So what's the gain? Pick a car that fits well for you. Then pay a mechanic $70 to put it on a lift and check it over before you buy it.
