It's not very clear and does not allow us to make out the number plate, but we succeed, nonetheless, in finding the car. The car hire firm provides us with the identity of the driver. He is a forty-year-old Polish man, who is traveling with his wife. They arrived in Portugal on April 28th, from Berlin. At Faro airport, they hired a car and put up in an apartment in Budens, near Praia da Luz. Unfortunately, on May 5th, at 7am, they had already left, taking with them their camera and all the photos from their holiday. We ask the German police, through Interpol, to monitor them as soon as they arrive in Berlin. All the passengers are questioned, but no one has seen a child looking like Madeleine. In Berlin, the couple take the train to return to Poland. Thus, the Polish trail comes to an end. We would like to have seen their photos...but that proved impossible. A lead is only valuable in as far as it is followed to the end, which was not the case with this one. We will realise that we shouldn't have ruled it out so quickly, and that it is still a topic of interest. 1. I don't know how you managed to read that corrupt ex-cop's book, but this is an interesting piece of information. A very clear lead that should have been followed up - why wasn't it? EDIT - Thanks for the link, but it's the moral indignation that causes my stomach to churn when I read that corrupt cop's words that makes it hard to read. 2. Have you ever been on that beach. It is not a tourist beach. The waves and tides are not suitable for tourists. I have been there. It is an awesome place if you like wild currents. Even the surfers don't venture there, but as you put it, someone was taking photos of kids. When I was there the beach was empty and the waves were wild!!

4. I haven't heard of that before. How wonderful if she was still alive when she was kidnapped. Treated well hopefully by people that just wanted a child to love. Then at least she could be reunited with her family and the family would have some kind of closure and the kidnappers prosecuted.
5. Poor Madeleine became a victim and a statistic. Since nearly 5 years have passed since the child's disappearance, I think one must be very careful in identifying suspects based on something as benign as photographing children on the beach, children that may well have been their own, or the children of friends. Jon Benete Ramsey was murdered in 1996 and they haven't found her murderer, who may have been mother Patsy, now deceased. They never found Natalee Halloways killers, despite nearly ovewhelming evidence and revelations reputedly coming out of the Netherlands all the time. They found Sharon Tate's murderers in 1969...there are virtually no unsolved murders currently in my little town of 26 000; ergo, where are the murderers of innocent Madeleine? They're there, under your noses, rendered impervious by their status in English society and their now notoreity. Remember what Elizabeth Taylor said: "Nothing disenfects like money, fame and success."
