- If you aren't planning on replacing it, and turn in your tags, you cancel your policy. If you are getting a new one, and/or keeping the tags, you keep the insurance. IF you go to online places to get comparison quotes, they harvest your personal information, and sell it to HUNDREDS of different agents, so might as well go to an agency and bypass the hassle.
- If you are planning on getting a new car/bike, it's best to keep that insurance live. If you are giving up this mode of transport, you should cancel your insurance. While there are definitely places online who are black hat, there are a few who are legit. For auto insurance, I would recommend progressive or netquote, as they offer comparisons for multiple carriers. What's great about quoting services is that a typical car insurance form is over 100 questions. If you got to individual companies to compare a few quotes, you'll have to fill out those 100 questions several times. If you go to places like progressive or nq, you only have to answer those questions once and you get several quotes to compare pricing. Also something to keep in mind is that insurance is regulated by the state, so it's good to check out the rules and regs in your state before you start shopping. NQ has a pretty good rundown of every state: http://www.netquote.com/stateinsurance.aspx
