How much less than sticker price should I pay for a new car?

Lets say that I am looking at buying a brand new $24,000 domestic car. If there are no rebates, how much of a discount can I expect from the car dealership?

  1. It all depends on the car and market conditions. Some cars are in demand and others are filling dealer lots. There is no magic formula. One thing you will find is the profit dealers make on cars is not that big. Depending on the car there may only be $2000 or so of markup on a car, so not a whole lot of room for negotiating. Its impossible to answer your question better without knowing exactly the car you are interested in. Shop www.kbb.com and www.edmunds.com for prices and info. www.carsdirect.com will give you a price on any car you want.
  2. You may not understand how this works. The dealer is going to try and make as much money as is possible off you as well as all other customers. Rebates, discounts and the like are just words or even tools they use. No matter what you do they are going to come out ahead and you will pay for it for a long time. Good luck.
