Overhaulin'

can i sell my car with a lien on the title and not get in trouble?

i have a ford taurus that i was making payments on back in 2009. It completely died on me in july last year and i had called the place for four months aftewards... asking them to come get the car i dont want it anymore and im not paying it anymore. he said it was fine that im not paying and he will try to come get the car. he did not come pick the car up. it still sits in my yard almost a year later. I wanted to know.... if i get rid of the car, and it has a lien on the title because i owe another 975 dollars on it, would i get in trouble for that if he were to come get the car eventually and its not here?

  1. you will still owe the money...who's gona buy it with no clear title??..
  2. the lien needs to be paid off so that you can get a clear title. without the title, the buyer won't be able to register the car.
  3. Yes you be in trouble. First of all its not your car until it is completely paid for.So you cant get rid of it. Second its illegal to sell a car with a lien on it. It has to be a clear title (paid for) before you can sell it.So if you sell it and they come to get it you are is deep doo doo.Call someone and have them tow it back to the place you were making payments to if you want to get rid of it as its there car. Also don't be surprised when you get sued for the balance on the loan as you still owe that...........md
  4. If you sell the car without paying off the lein, you are committing fraud.
  5. You cant legally sell it. And anyone buying it couldn't register it. Now, you might look into getting an abandoned title or mechanics lien. Or try selling it for parts only and hoping that nothing ever comes of it. Chances are it wont but its possible.
