help with my car stolen? SOON AS POSSIBLE?

ok I put my used car to sell on craigslist, 2 dudes show up, I told them I do not have the TITLE, we lost it, he said ok I'll give you the money now, sign a paper that you sold me your car, till the pinkslip comes then I will come pick it up. The car is not registered under my name, so I told them lets go to my work place, let my dad sign it, since he is the registered owner, they agreed we came out, he signed the papers, they left, they were supposed to call me and come down so we can do the DMV paperwork today. They never showed up and answer my calls. The car is still under my dads name, and we didint fill out any paperwork for the DMV. I realized that Its under my dads, if they do sh** with the car, they are comming after us. I called DMV they said you have to feel out a liability form, that you are not resposible for the car anymore, but I dont have their DRIVER LISENCE NUMBER, ADDRESS and all that information, JUST NAME AND LASTNAME....WHAT CAN I DO NOW, HOW CAN I REPORT? WE BOTH HAVE PAPERS THAT I AM SELLING THE CAR TO THIS PERSON....JUST A HAND WRITTEN PAPER........HELP SOON AS POSSIBLE....THANKS!!!!

  1. How is the car stolen if they paid for it?
  2. They paid for it and you've got proof with their signature on a signed agreement. If push comes to shove you can prove what happened in court. Make sure you make a deposit of the exact same dollar amount you sold the car for to your bank account too, then keep the next bank statement as added proof that you sold the car, it's just one more paper trail for you to rely on. And learn from this mistake, get more info next time.
  3. Uh- oh ! If those Guys don't show up with the REST of your Info, -your Butt is Toast ! :( PRAY they show up... But if they DON'T; take a "Lesson" from all this... -& be alittle more CAREFUL NEXT time... :o
  4. The car hasn't been stolen since you have been paid! The car belongs to them, they bought it. In the UK, the seller is responsible for the paperwork, they fill in the V5 (registration document) with the buyer, and the seller posts it... the buyer does not get it. The buyer simply gets a section of this document for their records. This liability form you've been asked to fill in, just do it as best you can. How did these people find out about the car, did they email/phone you, have you still got their number/email? You're responsible for the car until the documents are done. Personally, I wouldn't sell a car until I have the documents and ready to fill them out. A mistake on your part, but they have NOT stolen the car!
