Are Anderson Cooper and the president of GLADD making themselves and gays look bad?

Their is a trailer for an upcoming movie. In the trailer Vince vaughn says they following while at a sales meeting "Electric cars are gay. Not homosexual gay but your parents chaperoning the dance gay". Now anderson cooper thought this was so bad he went on Ellen and talked about how it should be removed. The pres of GLADD Jarod Barrios said that it was wrong and called for it to be removed. When Universal Stuidos refused he said the reason was homophobia. A reporter asked him if he felt this movie trailer could have something to do with the bullying and attacks in the LBGT community, his response was it was pretty easy to connect the dots Is this really effective? Going after a throwaway line in a Vince Vaugh Movie? As a straight male this seems like one of those instances when a certain group is being way to sensitve. Im mean people use the word gay to describe things they dont like. Just like they use white to describe dorky or uncool or jew to describe cheap. Why should this be made into a huge issue? And contarary to what the GLADD president said, hearing this line did not make me want to go out and beat up gays. Maybe im the exception? Did a non-jew just tell this hebrew what is offensive to my people? Come on people, if you cant laugh at yourselves somethings wrong with you. ACtually the reference to both white and jew being analogies for dorky and cheap to show that i do not care when those are used to describe me, because i dont take myself so seriously that i think i need to be protected.

  1. I think you're the exception. When you refer to something bad as being "gay", you're equating being gay as something bad. I've never heard people use the word white to describe something dorky or uncool, so I'm not sure where you live, maybe it's a regional thing. Also, using the word "jew" to describe someone as being cheap, is also highly offensive.
  2. you certainly know a lot about gay stuff for a straight male. i never heard about that or anderson cooper or GLADD and im gay
  3. not as bad as these people leading the straight marriage groups.
  4. By using the word gay to mean bad it makes it seem like being gay is a bad thing which does enforce homophobia and lead to bulling of gay youths. I hate hearing someone use the word gay to describe something bad it piss me off and i'm not even gay, I can only imagine the hell it most be for an actually gay person. It is a huge issue no person dissevers to feel like who they are is wrong or bad.
  5. Political correctness is gay
  6. I love Anderson Cooper. Go Glaad. Do you real say Jew to make cheep jokes? The song "everyone's a little bit racist" come to mind
  7. No.
  8. I'm going to have to agree with you. It's just a line in a movie. I'm gay and I'm a teen and I'm not offended by it. There are more things than lines in movies worth being concerned about. And I don't even see any links to the incidents of some LGBT teens. It's absolutely ridiculous. Why waste so much time and effort to complain about ONE line in a movie? I think he's overreacting. It's too much. There are people in the world homeless and starving who can't even afford dinner each night. There are LGBT people being treated unfairly and he complains about a line in a movie. Ridiculous.
  9. I'm not offended by it but some people are and for some it references hate and leads to more bullying. With me it's more intent behind something like is it meant as a joke or meant to hurt. Words are just words it's the intent behind them that matters.
  10. I totally get where you are coming from, but you said something that I think hits the nail on the head. "people use the word gay to describe things they dont like" That's the problem. Gay is associated with things people do not like. That is an extremely slippery slope. While most instance are in fact, benign, to the ignorant and uneducated, they aren't. It allows and continues to allow the word "gay" to have a negative connotation. That is the aspect that both Anderson and Jarod recognize. You are not like these ignorant people. You, like many other people, can understand that words have different meanings. To some redneck sheep bugger in the country - gay simply means "bad", in all aspects. I believe that is the point that was being addressed.
