procedure for buying a car in philippines?
what docs do I need from seller. Does seller have to go to notary public with you for deed of sale? What docs do I need for LTO? Where to get temporary insurance?

- There is no "deed of sale" on cars here. What you wil need is the "OR" Owners Record and "CR" Certificate of Registration. There is no need for a notary. You will need to change the OR and CR at the LTO Land Transportation Office. There will be many "fly by night" insurance companies near the LTO. If all you want is a piece of paper saying you want insurance and trust me you will never successfully receive a claim if needed. Go to a reputable insurance company. I have used Prudential Insurance Company of the Philippines. It's only roughly P8,000 for the required minimums and it's real coverage. As a foreigner living here for almost 10 years I strongly suggest you at least double the minimum required insurance. Get into a wreck and I guarantee you that you will be the one at fault just for being a foreigner.
- Actually, you do need a deed of absolute sale. It doesn't needed to be drafted by a lawyer, but you would have to have it notarized to be a public document. If you do not have it notarized, you won't have protection in case a third party claims that he/she has right to the car. You need the official receipt and certificate of registration. To get temporary insurance, like the other poster said, contact a reputable company, preferably with towing and break-down services bundle. Goodluck.
