How to learn to fix, maintain, and modify cars?

I'm a fairly new driver that has really got into cars the past couple of years. I know how to do all the basic stuff (oil changes and what not) but I really want to learn how everything in a car works and how to fix them, if there is ever a problem. Also, I'm really into Nissan z's and mustangs, cars that are always being modified, and I would like to know how to install those. Is there any good informative books or movies out there that teach you this stuff?

  1. Yes you need to look into a vo-tech school that may offer that. You can only get so much out of books the other must be hands on training.
  2. Buy one of those that needs work, geta repair manual n tools & fix it.
  3. If you consider it your hobby, then there's no need for school. It's fairly easy to pick-up the knowledge by reading books and watching how-to videos on youtube, expertvillage, and wonderhowto site etc. Best if there is a friend who could give you a hand because you'll need it. Majority of those how-to videos and books don't cover everything in details. You'll need to figure those out.
  4. You will have to put a figure to what you are prepared to spend, and what results you are required to achieve at the end of the exercise, and how long it should take you to achieve it. If these factors are not decided in advance. You may refer to your auto repair manual for fixing, maintaining and modifying you car or even to some sites that offers diy process.
