Need to ask an important question.I'm about to look at a car for sale by a seller on craiglist.?
It's a 2000 Honda Accord (EX) with around 93,000 miles on it. The owner said it has been wrecked by the previous owner; a fender bender in the front. The transmission has been rebuilt, which I guess could be a good thing or maybe not. Do you think I should go through with looking at this car considering all these things I just mentioned? The seller has it priced at $4,500

- what kind of title does he have for it ?does it have a rebuilt title or a salvaged title or a clean one ? if it has a rebuilt or a salvaged title then it drops almost half its value. i honestly wouldn't but a car that was wrecked. since it was wreck somethingcould be wrong that u cant see and that he WONT tell u... take someone that is very into cars and see what they think about it. ask for the records when the last oil change and anything else that is fixed
- A 93000 mile Honda with a rebuilt transmission sounds really fishy, like it was abused.
- Depends on the price
- ask to see the title make sure there are no brands, such as rebuilt, or salvage. if there is, the guy likely bought it to resell, and by not telling you as soon as you called, this is called lying by omission. Not a good plan to try selling a car by "forgetting" important information. As to a fender bender, this could mean anything or nothing, its unlikely the tranny was rebuilt at 93 k but look over the driver seat and the door hinges and the nobs and switches, 93 k miles everything should be almost new and the door hinges should be nice and tight, seat should show minimal wear, and all the switches and knobs should look like new, if the drivers seat is broken down, the door hinges wore out, carpet shredded, knob and switches and paint wore off of them, mileage is higher than it says. I always try to test drive a used car when cold, after sitting overnight, ask the guy not to warm it up. Try to start it after sitting overnight give it a minute or two at most for oil to circulate, then drive it like you stole it. Any used car, that will run, drive and stop and gt up to freeway speed (55mph) in the first 5 minutes may not be in too bad of shape, You did not put the price, so we cannot tell if its a deal or not sorry!!! and get a mechanic to look at this car, do not buy it, and go to a mechanic, have patience ok? this is what you need to buy a good used car, patience, and a good mechanical inspection. www.samarins.com is a free website with free information about buying used cars, it has repair histories to that can be help full, check the price on www.nada.com, this is a free consumer price guide, you can check auto trader to see what other Honda's are selling for all over the usa, take your time, and pass if this is a salvage title, you will not be able to insure it for full coverage, so if you pay six grand, and it gets totaled, you eat the entire six grand ok? salvage or rebuilt cars, are hard to sell too, let them go to some other sucker ok?
- 93,000 is low mileage for a honda. My Accord had a lot of transmission trouble... A front end collision is never a good sign, so it probably depends what he means by "fender bender", and if that;s why he rebuilt the transmission, it was no fender bender. I'd check it out and ask for the VIN so you can get a carfax report, and also check Blue Book on the price, it's free. Also, it's best to have a mechanic look at the car before you buy it...this usually costs less than 100. This can be a hassle, but it's definitely worth the time. I'd bring this up, at least. If the current owner sounds uncomfortable with this, then the car probably isn't worth your time, as he'd be better served if he's able to tell other buyers that a mechanic gave it a clean bill, even if you don't want it. This link should give you a little bit of information about things you can look for yourself, without a mechanic, to see what condition the car is in: http://www.ehow.com/how_7630826_inspect-car-body.html
