- there are in the wrong no one is going to stand for this . this government is killing the british People
- It's perfectly simple, I don't know why you're getting your knickers in such a knot about this. If you've got a car you're not going to be using, SORN it and you won't need to insure it. What's so difficult about that?
- uk is out of control on insurance and other mv problems/dont the people make the rules over there??
- The law is simple, if you are not using it and don't wish to insure it, then take it off the public road and declare SORN (which is free), What is so complicated about it? Besides they send a warning letter letter first anyway.
- Rodney, there is no change in the law. It is still the same. If your vehicle is on the road it must be taxed and insured. If it is off the road and on private property you SORN it and then you do not need to tax or insure it. Simple. All this latest thing you seem to be panicking over is about is that in future the MIB and DVLA will be co-operating over the issue, which they didn't before. I say again, the law stays the same.
- One simple fact -a car that is not insured cannt be used or even parked on road so the tax disc can be cashed in for money back and the car SORNed. If you need to keep it off road whilst awaiting a sale then it needs to be taxed which is a good selling point. If your car is off road and not being used it is easy to SORN it so it is your own fault if you do not and get caught, Sadly this measure has had to be brought in to combat the substantial minority of drivers taking the piss with no insurance - the pathetic scumbag minority ruining it for the majority again. Blame them not your government.
- There are a lot if people on here mixing and mis-matching road traffic law and my pet hate, not knowing the all important wording of the offences. The Road Traffic Act states that it's an offence to USE a vehicle on a road or other public place without valid insurance cover, but it's an offence to KEEP a vehicle on a road without an excise licence. For the purposes of prosecution, there is a massive difference. Presently, it is not an offence to park on a road with no insurance, and that's where the new proposal comes into force, basically, they want to change USE to KEEP.
- Easy. I have a ZXR400 motorbike in the shed, registered to me since 2001. I no longer drive it. It is declared off road SORN. It is also not insured, because I don't use it. Sometimes, I insure it to build up my no claims bonus and to protect it from theft. So your car should be taxed and insured at all times. Makes sense to me. I see no problem with this. You must have tax and insurance to drive in the UK anyway. When tax reminders come through, you can tax it or declare if off road (SORN) You can keep it insured, or not. If it is taxed, and your insurance expires, your should declare it SORN. Whats the problem? Unless you have a dead car on your drive and are too lazy to tick a box to declare it SORN.
