Should I fix my 93 Ford Explorer, tune my brother's 97 Saturn SW2, or buy a cheap used car?

I currently own a 93 Ford Explorer. It has 144,000 miles on it, V6, 4wd, and a/c. Recently my transmission gave out and I have been quoted at upwards of $1,000 to fix it. I do not have $1,000 but I would be able to secure a loan for that amount. I paid $1,000 for the car when I purchased it and it is in fair condition but needs new front brakes. My second option it my brother's 97 Saturn SW2. It has 142,000 miles on it, an I4, and no a/c. However, aside from needing a tune up and alignment there are no major problems with it. I estimate the tune up would cost somewhere around $500. My last choice is selling the car or trading it in and purchasing a newer model used car at a dealership. This is obviously the most expensive choice but the one with the least headaches. My question is simple, what do you think I should do? Fix the explorer, tune up the saturn, or buy a cheap used car?
