What's the best way to buy a cheap used car with bad credit?

My wife and I just bought a house, so we are working on building our credit, unfortunately my car just broke down yesterday. What is the best way to get a new used one without paying out the nose for interest? We are pretty desperate at this point, so suggestions are very much appreciated!

3. Using straight cash. That way you buy it outright with no need for credit.
4. Fixing the car is always the cheapest route.... unless you were racing and blew the engine before skidding in to a tree.
