Is sales tax cheaper on a 2009 USED car than it is for a 2011 NEW car. (both the same make and model)?

I am looking at buying either new or used. I only have a budget of 13,000. I am curious if there is a significant different on the cost of sales tax between a two year old used car, and a new car. For example, used 2009 Yaris versus 2011 new Yaris.

  1. Tax is a flat percentage. New or used doesn't matter.
  2. Since sales tax is directly related to price, the cheaper car will have less sales tax. Some dealerships will have sales that "we pay your sales tax" which is basically a discount of the same percentage that the sales tax is. If you're worried about it, I'd try to find one of these.
  3. Do you pay more tax on Coke than Pepsi? Tax doesnt care what you bought, its the same percentage for all items in a specific category
  4. Generally no, but you need to check your local laws. (In Oklahoma, there is no sales tax on vehicles, but there is an excise tax, and it differs for new and used.)
