Is SSN needed for buying a car in US / Oklahoma?
I am on H1B. I have applied for SSN and it is taking quite a long time to get one. Meanwhile I got my driving license, a medical insurance and a bank account. I intend to buy an used car with cash - no credit or financing needed. So the question is : will I be ok to buy a car?

- If you have cash, that's all they need.
- Depends on the price of the car. If you are paying cash for a vehicle and the transaction costs more than $10,000, you will need to complete IRS form 8300. In order to complete this form, you will need an SSN. This is not a tax form. This form is intended to prevent money laundering. In review, if the cost of the car is under 10K, then you will be fine. If it is over $10K, you will have to complete an IRS form 8300 at the dealership or the DMV (if a private party sale). In order to complete the Form 8300, you need an SSN.
