Tips on how to get first time drivers car insurance down?

Hey, so I have my driving test on June 3rd but i am looking to buy a car before then in these next few weeks. Ive been getting some quotes on some possible cars but the cheapest quote i am getting is £4,500, which is absolutly ridiculous! I thought £2,000 was pushing it and i dont intend to pay more than £2,000 a year. The cars ive been looking at are Peugot 206s, Vauxhall Corsa SXI, and Renault Clio's. Which i believe are in the cheapest insurance band. I just dont understand why im getting quotes of £4000/5000. Most of my firends with similar cars pay £1,500 a year which seems right. I must be doing something wrong. Can anyone give me tips on how to get the price down. Should i add my mum as an additional driver? Do modified cars (alloys and tinted windows) dramatically increase the insurance price? Any reccomended insurance companies? Thanks guys!

  1. any modifications to your car will increase the insurance by loads. take the pass plus test (if your in uk) and that normally drops the price by about 25%
  2. The quotes you are getting are the going rate now - it has gone up loads. If you are only going to pay £2000 then you are not going to be insuring a car until you are much much older. I reckon a lot of people that ask on here have friends who tell lies about thier insurance premiums to save face as many have said similar to you but I know it just cannot be true. I have tested many different drivers and cars with the comparison websites for research into this. Add a parent as a named driver - might help a little DO NOT have a parent as a fraudulent main driver - could land you in a very expensive uninsured situation and Mum and you in jail! SXi is not cheap - you need a lower spec like a Merit Nothing over 1.2 litre and 1.0 would be better Absolute no no to tints, alloys or any other mod at all. Shop around - no other way
  3. "...and i dont intend to pay more than £2,000 a year" Well then, you won't be driving will you? The average cost of insurance for a new driver, with an older, very basic, 1.0 litre car, is £2,700.
