How does car insurance work for new drivers?

I am going to test drive my FIRST CAR ever tomorrow....so I just don't understand how the car insurance thing will work...will I have to go get it before I drive off with the car? Btw I live in Boston, Mass. Any advice is appreciated..and I definitely want the cheapest and most basic one since I am tight with money....I will have to get it since Massachusetts forces you to have car insurance.
