Overhaulin'

I listed a car for sale on craigslist. I got this email from a potential buyer that just seems fishy to me.?

Thanks for the prompt response.. I am ready to buy it now for for my dad and i am not in town at the moment as i am a Network instillation manager and due to the nature of my work, It hard to make a phone calls and visiting of website are restricted but i squeezed out time to check this advert and send you an email regarding it. I really want it to be a surprise for my dad so i wont let him know anything about it until it gets delivered to him, i am sure he will be more than happy with it. I insisted on paypal because i don't have access to my bank account online as i don't have internet banking, but i can pay from my paypal account, as i have my bank a/c attached to it, i will need you to give me your paypal email address and the price so i can make the payments asap for it and please if you don't have paypal account yet, it is very easy to set up, go to www.paypal.com and get it set up, after you have set it up i will only need the e-mail address you use for registration with paypal so as to put the money through. I have a pick up agent that will come and pick it after i have made the payment... Thanks. ...Is using paypal normal for craigslist? This person has not even seen my car. I do not feel comfortable giving him/her any personal information as bad as this email is worded.

  1. No. Take ONLY cash. Period. Screw this guy. He can get his Paypal payment reversed after he's got the car.
  2. Make sure the car is not a scam ! My sister bought a car and they scammed her ! Trust no one with your money . and if its online make sure its safe :D
  3. This is a scam. I do not remember how it works but I think it involves checks which are deposited but do not clear.
  4. pay pal is used in a lot of sites. however if it seems fishy then it may well be. either drop this guy or really investigate him bbb police so on
  5. It is fishy. If he can send a "pick up agent" for the car then that man can bring CASH. Can you say "SCAM"?
  6. Guaranteed 100% scam.
  7. no its a scam its a scam I repeat its a scam the car will disappear and you will never see the money, and look at how stupid the story is Im too busy I cant use a phone blah blah, blah, EVERYONE HAS A PHONE NOW. I mean really? no phone he cant cal, so how is he going to talk to his dad? or pay pal ? or the shipper? its all BS DONT DO IT IT IS A SCAM TO GET A FREE CAR.
  8. Its a scam!
  9. dont be dumb
  10. No. The e-mail if fraudulent. Don't give out any personal information.
  11. I know nothing about paypal and why that might not work. But I can definitely sense some fishiness with the email. The fact that he didn't even mention the make of the car, or as any specific questions.
  12. NEVER use paypal for craigslist meet in person in a public place and exchange
  13. don't even reply. it's probably email phishing (you reply, you will get spam) I posted a computer I fixed on craigslist once and got several emails that seemed too "generic" as if whoever sent them had not really read or even seen the ad. When it comes to craigslist, or any other similar site, if you get emails calling whatever you're selling as "it" chances are it's a phishing scam and I sugggest marking the email as "SPAM" in your email and deleting it. don't reply, just ignore and delete.
  14. pick-up agent reference -> scam.
