What is the best car insurance company in Britain?

I am 17 and looking to be put on my dads insurance. The car is a 1.4 Renault Clio and the cheapest quote is £1600. How do you get them to take the price down when speaking to them on the phone? Also I have had a bike for a couple of years with my own insurance, will this make a difference? Cheers!

  1. None they're all sneaky, greedy, sexist, ignorant and arrogant hypocritical companies.
  2. No such thing as best their all in it for the money
  3. It's no good people moaning about money grabbing, sexist insurance companies, don't you realise that it's our driving habits that have pushed up insurance prices this high? Some people are higher risks than others,The young inexperienced, those that have the most accidents, drink drivers and speed freaks all help to push up prices. There are moves in the insurance industry to fit (voluntary) "black boxes" to vehicles to help assess peoples driving habits. This information could then be used to set individual premiums. As for the best, it's not easy to answer because each company will accept or reject certain classes of driver. At the moment I'm with Direct Line and have no complaint, but then I have been driving (including Fire appliances and Ambulances) for over 40 years, and I still have a clean licence. So, shop around and see who is the best.
  4. Bike will make no difference. On the phone you simply have to say that you have a cheaper quote but prefer them so what can they do? Getting Dad to illegally and fraudulently be the main driver when you really are will make you both criminals. Before you do this I strongly suggest you read the following BBC news report on parents breaking the law like this. Ignorance of the law is no defence and the insurers are well onto this scam and have lots of ways of finding out - the Police are watching for it too. Here is that report - http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/10241769
  5. Using your dads insurance is illegal, you need to start your own policy. At 17 it WILL be expensive, £2000+
