Best way to pay for a private car sale?

I am going to look at a car that is for sale privately on Sunday. Providing all goes ok then I would like to pay for and drive the car away on the day. My question is what is the best way to pay for the car that is almost instant and secure for both me and the seller? I don't really want to do cash as there is then no record that I have paid the seller. I've heard about chaps payments but I'm not sure if this would be instant on a Sunday? Any advice much appreciated! Thanks

2. cash works as you then ask the seller for a signed dated receipt just like a transaction in a shop
3. On a private sale cash is the only option that is (relatively) safe for both parties. Get the seller to write you a receipt saying you have paid, and if possible take a friend with you to act as a witness. The only other alternative would be for both of you to go to your bank and do a transfer from your account to his but on a Sunday that's not possible. Cash is king, I wouldn't accept anything else when I'm selling a car.
