i dont understand why my car insurance quote is so high?

i'm almost 17 so ideally i would like to get a car as soon as possible. I've been looking around for insurance and the cheapest quote i have got is £4000 for a 1.0 volkswagen lupo? I know the price varies with what area you live in, but when my sister first got insured she payed around 1000?

  1. Unfortunately it's because you're male. My brother and I both saw a massive difference between our insurance quotes because, statistically, young boys are more likely to have a crash. As of next year it will be changing though so boy's quotes come down. It may have come down a lot by the time you've passed your test. Hope this helps :)
  2. Well boys are charged more as the risk is higher .. not fair on i ndividuals I know but all boys are lumped together the same ..also as a learner driver ,, driving accompanied the premiums are usually lower , but once you pass the driving test the premiums rocket .. Yes am afraid 4 to 5 k is the norm .
  3. I am afraid that is the price of insurance these days due to being a new driver, young males are more more of a risk statistically than women. I found a good way to save a few Hundred quid to add a parent as a named driver. Men and women are due to pay equal insurance premiums after the EU ruled that gender-based pricing is against European law.Women under the age of 25 could see an average rise of 25 per cent to their premium by the end of 2012, so i am afraid they are not going to lower it for men, but insurance company's are going to make more money out of us.
  4. You are male and she is not - makes a difference although it wont next year The insurance has gone up 64% in the last year for young drivers (BBC1 Panorama last night) Your car may be more expensive to insure than what she had. There are many other factors that may be different or that may have changed that go to set the price. £4000 for a 17 year old male is not unusual. As per the guy on last nights BBC1 Panorama show, you could get a vintage tractor to ride around on - he pays £57 a year where a car would cost him £8000. If certain factors go against you then there is little you can do to change them - for example, age, where you live, where the car is kept overnight, your driving record etc. All yuo can do is shop around but fact is it may not be affordable for many years just like 33 years ago when I was in the same position. Todays younger drivers have seen their peers over the last few years benefit from a more affluent economy and cheaper prices - THIS IS OVER. For independent young peoples transport it is time to go back to small scooters and motorcycles just like my mates and me 33 years ago - it was fun and although I have a car my bike comes first even now
  5. That's what it costs to insure a 17 year old guy these days. Even a couple of years ago it wasn't as bad as it is now, but there doesn't seem to be any easy/legal ways round it.
