How to get discount when buying a new car?
I want a prius that costs 23500 but they ended up charging me for 29000 (including tax and all that shit). Is this normal? Is there any way I could get a discount as much as possible? How to ask for it? Thanks

- Costco has a buying service that will save you money on the cost of the car and maybe some of the other soft cost except for sales tax. I have compared and used this service several times. If you are a member of a credit union, they will usually have a buying service that will save you $$ and usually have better auto rates than the banks or the dealers. Good Luck.
- If you want the best price, simply pit two car dealerships against each other. If you don't have two in your town, make the trip to the next town. Ask one what the best price they can do is. Take that price to the other dealer and ask them if they can do better. Then take that price back to the initial dealer and see if they'll match or beat it. Generally, you'll end up with the same bottom line price and then can choose the dealer that you prefer to deal with for maintenance etc. Often you'll find that you'll receive more of a discount on accessories and not the base price so if you want to get the fully loaded model, the company will have more room for negotiation than the base model. As far as buying services are concerned, they are like mortgage brokers. They'll get you a lower price than the list price but it still won't compare to the price you can get if you put in your own legwork. After all they need to make a profit on the sale too otherwise they wouldn't provide the service.
- Not normal. You either got the royal hose job or you rolled over tons of negative equity from a vehicle you were already financing and traded in.
- You are NOT going to get a discount on a Prius. They are ONLY made in Japan and due to the earthquake they have shipped zero of them out, nor are they going to ship any of them soon. In may alone the wholesale value of a 2007 Prius went up 14%. As far as your figures, I would have to see your paperwork. You have at least $2500 in taxes and title fees, transportation. I would like to see a NEW 23,500 Prius, because they do not exists, cost is more than that.
