How do you remove a auto title lien .?

My Fiance bought a car In NY , 8 years ago . The title had "One lien recorded" on the actual title. She has had the car registered in her name since then with no problem. I believe what happened was the prior owner had a loan on the car and had either paid it off when he sold her the car or possibly before. So here is my question. #1- Was the seller in NY legally allowed to sell the car with the lien still printed on the title? #2- Since we no longer live in NY and have no way of contacting the seller how is this resolved?

  1. Most states won't register a vehicle to a new owner until the lean is taken off the old registration. The last owner had the car financed or took out a loan against the vehicle. The lean has to be satisfied before it can be removed. Good luck.
