Car insurance quote - why so much cheaper if I were married?
A friend told me that car insurance premiums are cheaper for married women than for divorced. I just ran a dummy quote for a married woman from my current provider and it came out 30 quid cheaper than I'm paying as a divorced person. I made sure all the details were exactly the same, and selected myself as the sole driver, so the only thing I changed was my marital status. What's the story with that? If I were still married and driving my own car, why should I pay less than I do now I'm rid of my cheating conniving ex?! I've had my own policy for the last 8 years so it's not as if I've been driving on his. It annoys me that even though I drive in exactly the same way as I did before (maybe even more carefully seeing as I now drive my own car instead of a shared one), I have to pay more.

- It's cheaper because they can get two cars out of it instead of just ensuring one.
- Because divorced women are well known for their ability to drive cars at ex-husbands.
- Lol I dunno. What if you put in single instead? It's a bit off though perhaps you should complain to your insurers. If you kick up a stink maybe they will reduce your claim by the £30. It shouldnt make any difference if you are married or not!
- it's all like that, it also depends on what job you have, your post code and a lot of other things that you wouldnt have though would make any diffrence. try someone elses post code and see the diffrence!
- It is believed that married people are less of a risk. This is because they have someone else to answer to if they wreck the car. It is also believed they are more cautious because they have a family. Dont change your policy until it is over.
- its this way because they know a single person will be going more than a married person will, its always been this way ,if your married your less likely to be out running around all the time,it was that way when i was single, getting married saves you money in one way and cost you in another, but its been proven that people who are single tend to drive more, and that increases your chances of being in an accident, good luck.
- supposedly married people are more careful and have less tendency's to speed ,drive erratic or cause accidents, its the same be you get for people under 25 and over 65, all a bunch of bs to justify the insurance company's act of charging you more, i think the mandatory insurance should be repealed, as it is a burden to people at this time,
- Check further. That's not right. Maybe because you never had a policy in YOUR name, was always in your husbands name. Life isn't fair. I drove a company car for twelve years, no insurance in my name. I retired, with NO accidents or tickets in thirty years, was PENALIZED because I had not had auto insurance paid for by me !!! Finally found a reputable company that had reasonable costs.
- It all comes down to actuarial tables. Statisticians compile data concerning accidents, insurance payouts, etc. and figure up what traits trend "riskier." They analyze what traits cost them more, and charge more to people that have those traits. Over the long run, anyone who is male will cost them more money, so they take more money from males to subsidize the money they will pay to males.
- Single persons (especially guys with sports cars who are trying to impress women with the powerfulness of their cars) tend to drive in a less safe way than married persons, who tend to be more concerned about not injuring children.
- Divorced people (on average) are less stable than married people and would therefore have more accidents
- Insurance can be weird. I have always been on my husbands insurance. A couple of years ago I was thinking of getting a smaller car for myself as I was driving my husbands BMW. The insurance company would do me my own policy for £250 but this would come down if I had my husband on as a named driver. How bizarre

- Married people are regarded as being more responsible than single people (which you are as you are now divorced) - this includes things like being less likely to get p....ed. or stoned, show off to mates etc. It is even cheaper if you have young children as insurers believe that people with young children will drive more carefully i.e. to avoid accidents when the children are in the car and even to make sure they come back home to look after them. I don't know what this will do for the school run . .
